  • Travel Pony is a new social-sharing hotel deal website, launched in 2013
  • Deep discounts on hotels when you share the deal with friends on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn

Our Editor’s Review

As I’m thinking of taking a trip to Las Vegas soon, I thought I’d check out the brand new hotel deal website: TravelPony.com.  I’ve heard a bit about Travel Pony, primarily that their discounts are significant and that part of the “deal” is that you agree to share Travel Pony with your friends on your social networks.  Upon searching for Las Vegas deals I was immediately impressed with the prices and selection that I found.  They listed The Weston for only $75 a night!  Are you kidding me?  My excitement dwindled when I realized that this is the “average price” on Travel Pony, and not for the dates I selected.  Rather, if I travel on the dates I want the rate is $163 a night.  Not bad, but they had really gotten my hopes up a second ago. What I would really like to see on Travel Pony is a rate calendar that would show me when I could book the Westin at the “average” rate of $75/night; otherwise, I’m left to my own guesswork. With the lack of a rate calendar, I rubbed my magic ball and selected some alternative mid-week dates.  The pricing dropped about $20 bucks to $146/night. For comparison purposes, I checked my go-to Las Vegas booking website (i4Vegas.com) and they had the Westin for over $300 a night, so either way the rate on Travel Pony is exceptionally lower. (BTW, the dates I used for my first search were for Labor Day weekend, which makes this an even sweeter deal).  I played around with the different date choices and it seems that the best deals were for travel at least 30 days in advance.

Praiseworthy pricing, indeed.

So much so that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to share it with my friends. This is a good thing because that is part of the deal on Travel Pony. To complete my reservation, I need to agree to the “Pony Promise” (LOL) and share this deal with my friends on a social network. I’m given the option to share via Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. The pre-drafted social sharing messages that Travel Pony suggests are a bit cheesy: “Giddy up let’s go @TravelPony” (ugh…cringe).  At least, they give me the option of changing that message, and this is exactly what I plan to do!

I was a bit surprised by the limited destination choices on Travel Pony. I counted only sixteen destinations.  Although, I realize that TravelPony is a new start-up (2013) and they likely have plans to add more destinations as they grow as a company. Their current destinations are:

Washington D.C., San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Orlando, New York, New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Fort Lauderdale, Denver, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta

It is noteworthy that I used the Travel Pony mobile site on my iPhone for most of this review and it worked perfectly. I was able to view all of the room details and reservation information without any problems. After my dates for Vegas are confirmed, I will definitely come back to Travel Pony to complete my reservation. I’m very excited about this new concept for travel booking combined with social sharing!
